New Students
Starting a new school can be a stressful time for many students. Getting use to new subjects and new teachers, as well as forming new friendships are just some of the challenges faced.
Students new to Kew High school are offered support to help them settle into their new environment. Every new student is introduced to a ‘buddy’ from their particular year level to assist with organisation and familiarity with the new school environment. How do they assist?
- By providing new students with a ‘student welcome’
- By showing them around the school
- By sharing their knowledge and experiences at Kew High School
- By familiarising them with the daily procedures at the school
Together with the Student Wellbeing Coordinator, the School Chaplain, Year level Coordinators and the Sub-school Coordinator, students are made to feel welcome, easing their transition into a new environment.
The School Chaplain meets with every new student to the school during the year to discuss any concerns or issues. Being able to express feelings is important in making students feel welcome and listened to. A welcome lunch is provided early in Term 1 of the school year.
The schools Connect program – aimed at establishing and promoting relationships and connectedness, also assists students to feel more comfortable in their new environment.
The school diary is a valuable source of information providing students with information on school uniform, bell times, the setting and achieving of goals, a map of the school, school rules and procedures. Students receive a school diary on their first day at the school. Parents/guardians are encouraged to familiarise themselves with its contents.
